Small Business Myths – Busted!

Small Businesses face many challenges when running their business! Many of these difficulties come from people having a ‘wrong’ impression of what running a small business is truly like! So here are the top 5 most common Small Business Myths that we hear – Busted!

Myth 1. Small businesses are always more expensive.

Truth: Small Businesses often offer incredible value for money and are more likely to sell themselves short! When you shop at a small business, you get high-quality, personalised customer service, products built to last, and services backed by years of passion and experience! While some items may appear to be more high-priced than mass-produced alternatives, you will not find the same high-quality product and service at a mass-produced retailer as you would at a small business!

Myth 2. Small business owners have a lot of free time.

Truth: Yes small business owners have more flexibility with their time don’t mistake that for free time! It is very common for small business owners to work more hours than you think! Many small business owners work alone, meaning they juggle many aspects of business by themselves! They are often accountants, digital marketers, sales, customer service, packaging and sending orders, business strategists, and much more solo!

Myth 3. Just one purchase won’t make a difference to a small business.

Truth: To a small business, every single order matters and does make a difference! One order could cover some material or packaging costs, provide some behind-the-scenes content for their socials and make the day of a small business owner! Your one purchase means more than you think to the small business owner you buy from!

Myth 4. Small businesses are easier to run than larger businesses.

Truth: As mentioned above, small business owner most often do everything themselves in their businesses without the support of a large team to delegate responsibilities to! Additionally, while larger companies have more resources to draw from, meaning much more visibility and opportunities. For a small business owner, building their visibility is something they navigate alone, often through social media and word of mouth.

(Supporting small business owners with their visibility is a big reason Support Small UK was born!)
